Fine Arts 1 is a course open to all 9-12th grade students. This is a foundation course for the sequence in the art program and all students are welcome and can be successful in this class. The program involves training in the basic visual techniques for using art materials and concepts with an emphasis on drawing. Research and experimentation in a variety of media is encouraged. Students are exposed to the work of many different artists, including contemporary artists working today. Homework is required. All students are required to keep a sketchbook in this class. Additionally, we explore different aspects of perception, how we see and experience the world around us and how that differs from others. We try to see well and say something about what we see. Students are involved in the critiques of their work. These are structured conversations about the art created in class. They are not a space for putting each other down, but rather building each other up. Critiques offer students an opportunity to help their peers see different points of view that may help bring their work to the next level. They also offer the students a chance to practice presentation skills. As I tell the kids, in this room sharing is caring!
